He was fast asleep in the Pack N Play she had originally bought for Amelia’s baby. There hadn’t been time to buy anything just for him. Luckily, Charlotte and Violet had immediately rushed out to buy an over-abundance of diapers and baby wipes and onesies and pacifers, and all the other little things she thought there had been months left to purchase before anyone in her house would need them, as soon as they had heard the news, and they had everything waiting for her by the time she had brought him home.
But they had left by now, and she was alone with Henry. She couldn’t stop staring at him. His tiny mouth, his little fingers, the way his chest rose and fell with each amazing breath.
She kept reaching out her hand, touching his head, feeling his baby soft skin under her fingers.
She didn’t want to close her eyes, didn’t want to go to sleep. Somewhere in the back of her mind, she was afraid she was dreaming, that she would wake up and he would be gone, that someone would tell her none of this was real, that someone somewhere had made a mistake.
So instead she just stared at him and touched him and marveled in him.
She knew she might regret this later, when he woke up and screamed for hours, when he wouldn’t sleep, but right now, she didn’t care. It still felt too good to be true, too amazing to be real.
There was something she did have to do, though. It was late, but she thought it would be okay.
She reached for her phone, hesitated a moment and then dialed.
“Addison?” His voice came across the line, familiar and warm and gentle. The butterflies in her stomach flip-flopped to life as they did every time she heard him speak.
“Hi, Derek,” she said softly. “I didn’t wake you, did I?”
“Just finishing up paperwork,” he said. “Is everything okay?”
“Everything is wonderful,” she breathed. “I have a baby.”
For a second there was silence, then “Really? Addison, that’s wonderful!”
She found her smile growing even wider across her face. “His name is Henry,” she said. “And he’s beautiful. His birth mom, she picked me. She picked me, Derek!”
“I’m happy for you, Addison,” he said. “I really am. Congratulations.”
“He’s perfect,” she told him. “He’s healthy and he’s … perfect. And he’s mine.”
Her voice broke on the last word, and her eyes flooded with tears. She could almost feel Derek on the other end of the line pulling her into an embrace.
“You deserve this, Addie,” he said gently. “I know what you’ve been through.”
There was so much she wanted to say to that. To ask him the question they always left unspoken. To wonder once again what if.
But she didn’t. Instead, she said, “Maybe he and Zola can meet one day.”
“You don’t even have to ask,” Derek said. “Zola would love to meet her little cousin Henry.”
“Cousin?”
“I told you, Addie, you’re always going to be family.”
Addison felt a tear drip down her cheek.
“Go be with your baby, Addie,” Derek said into her ear. “And send me a photo.”
She laughed. “I will. Goodbye, Derek. Thank you.”
She hung up the phone and wiped her eyes. She knew there was a part of her that would always want Derek back. But for the first time, she felt like she had finally let go of the past.
Her future was in front of her, and he was every man she had ever wanted.
